Conrad-Hansen Musikschule Lippstadt
Conrad-Hansen-Musikschule der Stadt Lippstadt, Von-Galen-Platz, Lippstadt, Allemagne

Leon Theremin’s 120th birthday is – naturally – a wonderful occasion to organize a Theremin Academy at the Lippstadt Music School which gave birth to the famous Without Touch festivals in 2007. Dutch Thereminist and expert for experimental music Wilco Botermans and Academy director Thierry Frenkel will offer a large choice of workshops, chamber music classes, group and individual lessons.

As a special highlight, there will be a “Build your own Theremin” workshop, where the participants will build their own instrument, based on the famous “Thierrymin” circuit, guided by Wilco.

13 people have registered for now.

Academy Program

From the beginning to the end

  • Individual Theremin lessons with Thierry Frenkel
  • Individual Theremin lessons with Wilco Botermans
  • Theremin service and upgrade by Thierry Frenkel

Friday, November 25 in the afternoon

  • Workshop with Wilco Botermans (1h): Introduction to the Theremini
The Theremini has been controversially discussed since it came to market. “Classical Thereminists” have rather been disappointed with it, while experimental musicians adore its extended digital synthesizer functions. (Demonstration and guided hands-on)

Saturday, November 26 in the morning

  • Workshop with Wilco Botermans (2h): Optimal use of the Etherwave PLUS theremin
    Part 1 (theoretical):
Introduction Control Voltage, brief history of analogue synths, how to connect to what – Part 2 (practical): Experimenting with Control Voltage and analogue synths.
  • Chamber music class with Thierry Frenkel – Part I/II:
Working on a piece for Theremin trio, quartet, or quintet, depending on the registrations

Saturday, November 26 in the afternoon

  • Workshop with Wilco Botermans (3h): Build your own “Thierrymin”
The “Thierrymin” circuit is a pitch theremin with a telescopic antenna, powered by a 9V block battery. You’ll first solder the components onto the printed circuit board, then assemble the peripherals and finally learn to tune everything. Besides having a nice theremin, you’ll better understand how a theremin works after you did this workshop! All materials are included in the workshop fee.
  • Chamber music class with Thierry Frenkel – Part II/II:
Working on a piece for Theremin trio, quartet, or quintet, depending on the registrations
  • 19:00h: Common dinner, followed by an “open end – open stage” student’s concert
    in the “Kulturcafé Orfeo“.

Sunday, November 27

  • Workshop with Wilco Botermans (1h): Theremin & FX
Sound design with the theremin using analogue and digital FX devices.
    (Short introduction + practical)
